What documents you need to open a bank account in India?

So, with the new RBI rules and regulations, opening a bank account is supposed to be easy. Gone are the days when you needed to provide all kinds of documents before opening a bank account. Below is the list of accepted documents you need for opening a bank account in India.

Documents required for opening bank account in India

The Government of India has notified six documents as ‘Officially Valid Documents’ (OVDs) for the purpose of producing proof of identity. These six documents are….

  1. Valid Indian Passport
  2. Valid Driving License
  3. Voters’ Identity Card
  4. PAN Card
  5. Aadhaar Card issued by UIDAI and
  6. NREGA Job Card.

Foe opening a bank account, you need to submit any one of the above six documents as proof of identity. The important thing in any of these documents is the address (residential address). You need to make sure that any of the above documents given should have your residential address listed. Otherwise, it will not be considered a valid ID.

Having said that, even if you cannot provide any of the above bank details, you can still open a bank account called the “small bank account”. You can open a small bank account by just providing your photo and thumb impression or signature on it.

However, “Small bank accounts” have some limitations as listed below.

  • Balance in small accounts at any point of time should not exceed Rs.50,000
  • Total credits in one year should not exceed Rs.1,00,000
  • Total withdrawal and transfers in a month should not exceed Rs.10,000
  • Foreign remittances cannot be credited to small accounts.

So, yes India Government has made is super easy for people to open a bank account in India. You can open a small account just with your photo and signature, and if any of the above mentioned documents are given, a regular bank account too.
