So, turns out Google has announced it’s new phone, the Google Pixel 2 and for a first time, it will be available in India along with other countries. The phone, is kind of a big deal. Here’s why.

Not really cheaper than the iPhone!

Hold on to your horses before you get too excited. First things first. The smaller Pixel 2 is priced at Rs 61,000 for the basic 64GB variant and goes all the way up to Rs 70,000 for the 128GB version. The Pixel 2 XL, however, is priced at Rs 73,000 for 64GB and Rs 82,000 for 128GB.

The basic variant is comparatively cheaper but this being a premium phone from Google, isn’t really competing on the price with the iPhone. Some solid moolah to shed there!

Pretty innovative technically!

Skip the price. As far as features go, the Pixel 2 is pretty neatly designed. It’s got some cool upgrades from its previous versions.

Both the phones variants (Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are waterproof and are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor. They got 4GB of RAM processing power, and has options for 64 or 128GB of storage. Storage of photos is not going to be a big deal on these big boys because Google is offering lifetime free storage of photos on their cloud platform. Both the front and rear cameras are capable of creating depth-of-field effects through their inbuilt software (something to compete the iPhone with). The bigger phone, the Google Pixel 2 XL comes with a 6-inch nearly bezel-less OLED panel, while the smaller Pixel 2 carries the same 5-inch Full HD display from last year. Both of them come with a rear fingerprint scanner and ditches the standard headphone jack (Something that the iPhone also got rid of).

So essentially, the tech specs are pretty good and strong on this phone.

E-Sims! Say, what?

So, turns out Google is offering an option to get rid of those clunky SIM cards you’ve been using all this while. Instead, get e-SIMs. As you might have guessed right, these are non-physical SIM cards (no cards really) that you can configure in the phone. Of course, your carrier has to be competent. At the moment, no carrier in India is competent with e-SIMs, but hopefully some will be in the future.

Always on display and automatic music recognition

So, the new Google Pixel 2 phones will have the display always on. (Hopefully without hurting the battery life). And also, have their microphones automatically turned on all the time, that it will detect that song playing in the background. Hmmm.. Cough.. Cough… Privacy!

A better camera, 4K and everything. Of course!

Have you ever heard a new phone with no camera updates? Of course not. The Google Pixel 2 also, raises up the bar for camera and comes with a 12-megapixel camera with Optical Image Stabilization and a front camera with 8-megapixel resolution. The rear camera has F/1.8 aperture, Dual pixel autofocus, and it supports 4K video recording.

Those are the major updates, but it also has stuff such as Bluetooth 5 technology, continuous motion shots option, colored power button, better launcher etc on the frill side.

Now, the big question is, are you going to shell out Rs.80,000 for the Pixel 2 or the iPhone X?
