So, Netflix has launched in India – Yay!
Movie lovers in India were waiting for this for long! Now anyone in India with a valid internet connection on a streaming device including mobile, laptop or tablet can watch Hindi movies, English movies and all other documentaries on Netflix for a nominal price.
Netflix India Pricing
Netflix is priced at three slabs. It starts at Rs. 500 and goes up to Rs.850 based on whether you want HD streaming or use more than one device at the same time. It’s pretty much the same price as in USA, where the plan starts at $7.99 a month (equivalent to Rs. 500 in India).
How To Use Netflix without Credit card (using Debit card)?
The problem with India is that credit cards are not a popular thing with everyone. Sure, the online shopping market and the millennials are all promising, but credit card is not a familiar thing to India unlike USA. More people use Debit Cards and with the young tech savvy folks, it’s PayPal. And Netflix only allows you to subscribe using credit card. So, how can you work around this?
Worry not? There’s a way out.
All you have to do to subscribe to Netflix using a debit card is sign up for either of these two services – a) Netteller or b) Entropay.
Netteller is a service that lets you add funds to your virtual “credit card” called the Netpay card. With it, for a nominal charge, you can add funds to your account and use your Net+ Prepaid card to pay and subscribe for Netflix. There is a 2.5% charge though for this service.
Entropay on the other hand is a cheaper solution. It is a prepaid virtual credit card (from Visa) that you can use for transactions online. What you do is register for the service, add your funds (from your debit card or bank account) and get your virtual credit card, which you can use on Netflix for subscription.
There are some fees associated with this however, as below.
EntroPay Fees | |
Opening an EntroPay Account | Free |
Creating an EntroPay Virtual Visa Card | Free |
Loading an EntroPay card from a personal credit or debit card | 4.95% |
Receive money from a merchant onto an EntroPay card | 1.95% |
Transfer between EntroPay Cards | $0.20 / £0.10 / €0.15 |
Foreign exchange fee on relevant purchases | 2% |
Spend using an EntroPay card | Free |
Return money to a personal credit or debit card | $ 6 / £ 3 / € 4.50 |
Destroy an EntroPay Virtual Visa | Free |
As you can see, the charge is lower that Netteller. For both services, there are no credit checks, so it is easy for you to get approved, unlike real credit cards. Both the services lets you “convert” your debit card to a virtual credit card for use in online transactions like Netflix or other subscriptions.
Enjoy your Netflix! 🙂
Update: Netflix India now accepts Debit cards as well.
