Why buy a new mobile phone?
Just look at your current mobile phone. Isn’t it old compared to some of the new mobile phones launched in India? Mobile phones in the Indian market keep updating themselves, constantly.
A better camera with higher resolution, a thinner phone, brighter display, better sound – everything is better in a new mobile phone. I personally believe that a mobile phone is worth keeping for a maximum of 2-3 years. After that, buy a new phone as there is always new technology. I keep upgrading my mobile phone every 2-3 years and currently I have an iPhone X.
So, the short answer is – buy a new mobile phone every 2-3 years and keep yourself updated.
Where to buy new mobile phones in India?
This is a classic question. Should you buy online or from your local mobile store?
Well, my answer is, where ever you can get a good price. Sometimes it is online, sometimes it is at your local store. Further down in this article, I will show you how you can get a good discount on a new mobile phone from your local mobile phone store, anywhere in India.
Why do new mobile phones get sold out fast online?
For example, when a new mobile phone is released, companies tie up with online websites exclusively to promote their product. This is why you see that some brands are available only on Amazon or Flipkart initially. At this time, the mobile companies give a certain amount of phones to these online websites, just to create hype. Like they will give 1,000 units to Amazon, for an exclusive sale for the first week of launch.
This creates an artificial demand because everybody is trying to buy the phone. And in a few minutes, all the phones get sold (because there were only 1,000 of them in the first place, right?). Now, this will create even more demand and perception in other people’s minds that this is some hard-to-get phone, that I should also get.
My recommendation is not to fall for this kind of offer. If there is a price discount, yes go for it. But just because everybody wants a new mobile phone, you don’t need to get one.
How to get discounts at a local mobile store anywhere in India
This is the interesting part. You know that in India, the best deals on electronics, especially mobile phones is available online. Local stores always have their margins up because there are more middlemen in between you and the company. Add their commission and your price goes up.
In online shops, however, there are no middlemen. The companies sell their phones directly (of with just one middle man) on online shopping platforms so that they are able to keep the price lowest.
Now, when you visit a local store and ask for a particular mobile, you’re looking at the highest price. The advantage you have however is that you get the product immediately and you have someone to talk to and get back to if there are any issues.
But, how do get the local stores to reduce their prices? Simple. Take your mobile with you, show the discounted price of the product you’re interested in on your favorite online platform (say Flipkart or Amazon), and ask them to match the price. If you’re a serious buyer (or if they feel like that), the local store will reduce the price of their product, strip off their margins and try to match the price with the online website.
I try this tactic all the time and it works like a charm.
