What is the matter? No WhatsApp? I know many of you may not be able to imagine a life without WhatsApp. It has become a part and parcel of everyone’s life by now. Especially with the new upgraded version, you can even video call your dear ones. Well, I’m a big fan of WhatsApp video calling facility. I can talk to my friends and family from anywhere at any point. How cool is that?
Folks, some of you will have bad news here. WhatsApp has decided to discontinue running on some of the older version smartphones by the end of 2016. They have decided to pull the plug on smartphones running on older versions of Andriod, iOS, and Windows. The major reason being that the older versions are unable to offer the kind of capabilities Whatsapp need to expand the app’s features in the future.
Don’t worry, some of you guys are safe if you own a smartphone with Andriod 2.3 Gingerbread. You are safe if you own a smartphone launched over 5 years ago. Coming to iPhones, users who are using iPhone 3Gs will have trouble as it was launched in 2009. Everything post 2009 should be fine.
Some of the smartphones which would not be supported by Whatsapp in 2017 are:
- All smartphone on Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 or earlier
- Windows – Windows Phone 7 or earlier
- iPhone- 3Gs/iOS 6 or earlier
The WhatsApp support will be extended for the following devices until June 2017:
- Blackberry 10 running on BBOS
- Nokia S40 running on Symbian S40
Personally, I feel this move by WhatsApp does make sense. With the growing features and user demands, WhatsApp can survive only on high-end versions of Andriod/ iOS/Windows. The newer features like voice calling and video calling can’t be sustained by the older phones and operating systems. What do you feel about this change?
