The Standard Chartered Ultimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in 2019, I was deep into the HDFC ecosystem. Regalia this, Diners that. Then a friend from my SuperMoney days (fellow returnee) mentioned this &#8220;hidden gem&#8221; from Standard Chartered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Dude, it gives 3.33% on everything. No exclusions. Even rent payments.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought he was joking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out, he wasn&#8217;t. \ud83e\udd2f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Standard Chartered Ultimate Discovery \ud83d\udcd6<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Accidental Find<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was at a fintech conference in Bangalore. 2019. Pre-COVID world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard Chartered had a tiny booth tucked away in the corner. Most people were ignoring it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Big mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The relationship manager there, Priya, was explaining their Ultimate card to this one guy. I overheard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sir, you get 5 points per \u20b9150 spent. No categories. No caps. Even insurance premiums.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My ears perked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What about rent?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Yes sir. Not always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some months my spending is lower. Especially during travel months when I&#8217;m not in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Premium Benefits: The Golf Story \u26f3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Monthly Golf Perk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You get 1 complimentary golf game per month at selected domestic golf courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not a golfer. But my neighbor uncle is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He calculated the value for me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Average green fee: \u20b94,500<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monthly games: 1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Annual value: \u20b954,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s more than 10 times the annual fee!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Golf Coaching Bonus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also get 1 free golf coaching session each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uncle ji took advantage of this too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Said the coaching alone saved him \u20b936,000 annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you play golf, this card pays for itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foreign Exchange: The 2% Advantage \ud83d\udcb1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Competitive Forex Rate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard Chartered Ultimate offers a reduced foreign currency markup fee of 2% on all foreign currency transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My 2024 US Trip Calculation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Total foreign spend: $5,000 (\u20b94.2L)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ultimate forex charge: \u20b98,400 (2%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regular card charge: \u20b914,700 (3.5%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Savings: \u20b96,300<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus I earned 14,000 reward points worth \u20b914,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Duty Free Cashback<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You get 5% cashback on all duty-free purchases at airports, with a maximum of \u20b91,000 per statement cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My family&#8217;s duty free spending at Chennai airport: \u20b912,000. Cashback earned: \u20b9600.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not life changing. But every bit helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Redemption Reality Check \ud83d\udcf1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The 1:1 Redemption Promise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each reward point earned on the Standard Chartered Ultimate credit card is worth Rs 1 for all rewards on its redemption portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>True. But there&#8217;s a catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The \u20b999 Redemption Fee<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard Chartered has a reward redemption fee of \u20b999 + GST, which is regressive given the card already has an annual fee of \u20b95000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This annoyed me. A lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You pay \u20b95,900 annual fee. Then pay \u20b9117 (with GST) every time you redeem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Available Redemption Options<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can redeem points for electronics, home appliances, lifestyle products, travel accessories, and gift vouchers from brands like Arrow, Lifestyle, Pantaloons, and Croma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Amazon\/Flipkart Void<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no Amazon or Flipkart vouchers available on the portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a dealbreaker for many friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re all used to Amazon shopping.
