Vivo Nex Review: Own a Phone with a “Popup Camera”?
Leading Chinese smartphone maker, Vivo, is known for its interesting innovations. This time the company is ready bring its first smartphone with a “pop-up” selfie camera for the Indian audience with the Vivo Nex.
Vivo Nex was launched at an event in Delhi on July 19, 2018, which was live streamed on YouTube, to allow the enthusiastic public to catch the real time action. The smartphone recently launched in China was powered by a Snapdragon 710 SoC and 6GB of RAM. However, it is the Vivo Nex S, featuring the Snapdragon 845 SoC processor, 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, which has been rebranded as Vivo Nex in India.
Other than the motorized selfie camera that pops out, the major highlights of this smartphone is its dual real camera and in-display fingerprint scanner.
In India, the Vivo Nex smartphone will be an Amazon exclusive and can only be bought through this e-commerce site. The device, with its high-end specifications, has been priced at ?44,990 and will be available from July 21, 2018. In the near future, the phone will be available in different variants and priced between ?40,990 and ?49,990.
With such a hefty price tag, Vivo had made it clear that this phone is all set to compete with the iPhone 8, One Plus 6 and Samsung Galaxy S9.
Here’s a look at what you can expect from the Vivo Nex.
Vivo Nex Specifications
Vivo Nex is a dual-SIM (Nano) smartphone that is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC processor, coupled with 8GB of RAM. The device runs on the Android 8.1 Oreo-based Funtouch OS 4.0. It flaunts a 6.59-inch full-HD+ display, with a 19.3:9 aspect ratio and resolution of 1080×2316 pixels. The phone weights 199 gm and comes with inbuilt storage of 128GB or 256GB. The dimensions of Vivo Nex are 162 x 77 x 7.98 mm.
As in the other Vivo smartphone, the USP of the Nex is also its camera, with the device featuring a dual rear camera setup, with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 primary sensor with dual-core pixels and 4-axis OIS and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The major highlight of the smartphone is the 8-megapixel pop-up camera on the front.
Vivo Nex offers various connectivity options, such as 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, USB 2.0 port and OTG support. The smartphone is powered by a 4000mAh battery.

Display and Looks
Most Vivo models launched in recent times have been iPhone X wannabes, mainly due to the similar full screen displays and presence of a notch on the top. The most important thing that makes Vivo Nex a unique flagship phone is that in this model, the Chinese phone maker has bid goodbye to the notch. This is definitely good news for all notch haters. On the front, you’ll find nothing but the excellent display.
Vivo Nex sports a glass and metal body. The patterned design at the back of the phone gives it a very desirable premium look. However, what delighted me the most was the Super AMOLED display and super thin bezels. The colours produced by the full HD+ 2316 X 1080 pixel in a full display are amazing and make this phone a perfect choice for Netflix or YouTube lovers.
However, I doubt that with a 6.59-inch display and 199 gm weight, some users might find using the smartphone with one hand challenging.

Performance and Battery
With 8 GB of RAM and an onboard storage of 128 GB, one cannot ask for more. Vivo Nex got a big thumbs-up from me in terms of performance as well. Run as many tabs as you can on Chrome or play graphic-intensive games, the processor will never disappoint. The reviews by The Indian Express say that the 4000mAh battery is the most impressive feature, which can last for up to 36 hours on a single charge, even with heavy usage. And, the phone can get charged to full capacity within just half an hour.
The phone has a fingerprint sensor and a piezoelectric earpiece speaker to make calls, both of which have been placed under the display.
Camera and Apps
Vivo is known for its perfect selfie shooters. This time, the brand has gone all out to attract selfie lovers with an exciting experience by introducing a selfie camera that pop ups when needed. The phone is designed such that the camera is tucked away and stays inside the phone’s body till you call it up. Don’t think that the company has used this feature only to sensationalize the product. This selfie camera delivers excellent performance too, taking sharp pictures. However, you might not find any difference between the various lighting modes offered with the portrait mode in selfies.
Having said that, it is not only the selfie shooter that will impress. The rear camera is great too and captures photos in detail, regardless of location and lighting options. However, the colours produced by the camera may seem over-saturated.
Although the Vivo Nex is unique in many ways, its full view display and lack of notch makes it look similar to the Oppo Find X, which also has motorized cameras, both on the front and the back.

For the Indian buyer, the cost of the Nex is close to ?45,000. For a device that delivers a smooth performance, has an innovative selfie camera, along with other high-end specifications, the price seems reasonable. But, this hefty price tag definitely restricts this amazing smartphone to an elite group of buyers. There are chances that at this price, these buyers might prefer to invest in the less costly 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage of the One Plus 6.
Reason I Like This Phone
Pop-up selfie camera
4000mAh battery that charges within 30 minutes and lasts for more than 36 hours
Reasons I Hate This phone
Hefty price tag
Big and unwieldy size
Over saturation of colours in photographs
Should you buy Vivo Nex?
For those who like to own the latest and best, the innovative Vivo Nex could be a good buy. That popping up camera, even though saves up lot of space on the phone is kinda silly. I mean, wait for the day when you’ll hear reports of people breaking off the camera by accident. But of course, it is something new to try out!
