Vivo Y71 Review: Amazing Mobile Phone with Good Features

The Vivo Y71, with its 18:9 FullView display, narrow bezels and face unlock, was launched in India in April 2018. The phone comes with a 6-inch touchscreen display and available in Black and Gold variants.

I found this phone highly appealing for the masses, given that it has been affordably priced at around ?10,000 and can be bought both offline and online. It is available online on the Vivo E-store, Flipkart, Amazon and Paytm Mall.

I found the Face Access unlock feature to be one of the key aspects of the Vivo Y71. Facial recognition technology not only unlocks the handset, but its smart low volume intuitively lowers the volume of incoming calls, message alerts and alarms when the user looks at the screen.

However, I was surprised by most of the user reviews, which stated that this phone was a waste of money due to its low RAM and poor camera quality. So, I decided to try out the device for myself and determine whether the reviews held any truth.

Vivo Y71 Display and Looks

The Vivo Y71 features an impressive 6-inch FullView display, with 84.4% screen to body ratio and 18:9 aspect ratio. When compared to the Vivo Y55L, the display of the Y71 is 13% larger. The impressive screen to body ratio gives a better viewing experience and has been achieved by minimizing the bezels. Vivo claims that its aspect ratio, which is higher than the standard 16:9, allows the viewer to watch 12.5% more content. However, the bigger size doesn’t mean that the phone is heavy to carry around. This phone is really lightweight, slim and so compact that you can easily operate it with one hand.

However, I really wish that the phone could have a full HD display. The phone also missed mandatory display protection like Gorilla Glass.

The body of the Vivo Y71 is slightly curved, which easily fits in the palm neatly. Moreover, the Chinese brand has used the high polymer nano-blasting technique to smoothen the phone’s surface, which gives it an elegant look.

Unfortunately, they missed out on the finger print sensor, which is present in other contemporary products, such as the Oppo F1.

Vivo Y71 Camera and Apps

Vivo_Y71_India

Unlike other Vivo models that flaunt their high resolution camera sensors, the Vivo Y71 features a 13MP primary camera at the back, which supports PDAF technology, and a 5MP camera at the front. However, in this model too, Vivo has made sure that the user gets the perfect click every time.

The 13MP rear cameras with PDAF has a lighting optimization feature that helps in low light conditions and even bright light. Also, the front camera is equipped with an AI Beauty feature, which learns about users face and photographic habits over time. This feature scans the recognition spots on your face and identifies age, skin tone, gender and applies a variety of beauty effects to give you a flawless selfie, every single time. What I really like about the photos is that they look absolutely natural.

Vivo Y71’s Face Access feature scans facial features to unlock the phone, while the smartphone’s smart split feature allows the user to multitask conveniently. Splitting the screen into two at a 15.21 cm (6 inch) 18:9 FullView ™ display gives larger viewing space for each of the applications.

The device also comes with features like active noise cancellation, with a dedicated mic. The Vivo Y71 has good speakers too, although if it had been stereo speakers, the multimedia experience would have been taken to a whole new level.

Performance and Battery Life

The Vivo Y71 is powered by the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that provides excellent performance. No matter how many apps you open, with 3 GB/4GB RAM, there won’t be any lag in performance. The smartphone performs well with social media and videos too. Vivo smartly performs memory optimization tasks and defragmentation to maintain smooth operations over time. The Vivo Y71 runs on the advanced Android 8.1 optimization, which further adds to this device’s efficiency.

The smartphone is fuelled by a 3360mAh battery. To improve the battery performance, Vivo has used the Vivo Smart Engine that provides additional power management. On regular use, a single charge could last you more than 24 hours.

Vivo Y71 Price

The price of 6-inch Vivo Y71 starts from ?10,440 in India, which makes the phone highly affordable. Moreover, the presence of great features and promising specs further adds to the desirability of this device. If you use online platforms like Amazon to make your purchase, you’ll get a 10% instant discount when you use an ICICI credit card.

Reasons Why I Like This Phone

  • Excellent rear camera
  • Affordable price
  • Excellent configuration

Reasons Why I Hate This Phone

  • Could have had a fingerprint scanner
  • No display protection
  • Does not have a Full HD display

Vivo Y71 is a great phone with strong features. I highly recommend this competitively priced phone for buyers looking for a good deal within a budget.
