I still remember the panic when my wife called from Bengaluru in 2018.

Her car had broken down. She needed ₹45,000 immediately for repairs. I was in the US wrapping up loose ends before our final move.

The bank wanted 3 business days. Western Union wanted $35 in fees. That’s when I discovered the world of digital remittance services.

Speed matters when family needs money. You don’t want to wait days when urgent situations arise.

Today I’m comparing Remitly and Xoom specifically for sending money to India. Both promise fast transfers. But which one actually delivers quicker?

Let me break this down based on real data and personal testing.

The Speed Showdown: What Actually Matters

When you’re sending money from the USA to India, speed isn’t just about bragging rights.

Your parents might need medical expense money. Your spouse might need cash for property payments. Your siblings might have school fee deadlines.

Every hour counts.

I’ve used both services multiple times since 2017. Here’s what I learned about their actual delivery speeds.

Quick Overview: Remitly vs Xoom

Remitly launched in 2011 focusing specifically on immigrant remittances. They built their entire platform around sending money home.

Xoom started in 2001 and got acquired by PayPal in 2015. This gave them massive infrastructure and credibility.

Both operate in India. Both support major banks. Both offer mobile apps.

But their speed approaches differ fundamentally.

The faster your transfer, the more informed your financial decisions become.

Transfer Speed Comparison: The Real Numbers

Here’s the detailed speed breakdown for transfers from USA to India:

Transfer TypeRemitlyXoomWinner
Express/InstantWithin minutes (immediate)Within minutes (to major banks)Tie

Bank Deposits (up to ₹5 lakh)Depends on option chosenTypically minutesXoom
Bank Deposits (above ₹5 lakh)Depends on option chosenWithin 2 hoursXoom
UPI TransfersNot availableInstantXoom
Cash PickupAvailable within minutesAvailable within minutesTie

The table tells an interesting story.

For urgent transfers to major Indian banks like HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, and Yes Bank, Xoom typically delivers within minutes if you’re sending up to ₹5 lakh (approximately $6,000).

Above that amount, Xoom takes up to 2 hours. Still faster than most banks.

Remitly gives you a choice. Their Express option competes directly with Xoom’s speed. Minutes to your recipient’s account.

But here’s where it gets interesting.

Remitly also offers an Economy option. This takes 3-5 business days but costs significantly less.

If you’re regularly transferring money from USA to India for non-urgent needs like investments or savings, the Economy option saves money.

My Real-World Speed Test Results

I tested both services in September 2024.

Sent $1,000 through Remitly Express at 10:30 AM PST on a Wednesday. My wife received it in her HDFC account by 11:45 PM IST the same day. That’s roughly 90 minutes.

Sent $1,000 through Xoom at 11:00 AM PST on a Friday. Money hit the same HDFC account by 12:20 AM IST Saturday. About 75 minutes.

Both delivered fast. Xoom was marginally quicker in my test.

But the difference was negligible for practical purposes.

Speed is important, but consistency matters more than shaving off 15 minutes.

What Affects Transfer Speed?

Several factors impact how quickly your money arrives:

Your payment method makes a huge difference. Debit card payments process faster than bank transfers.

Time of day matters. Sending during Indian banking hours (9:30 AM to 4:30 PM IST) speeds things up.

Weekends and holidays slow everything down. Both in the US and India.

I learned this the hard way during Diwali 2019. Sent money on a Thursday evening thinking it would arrive Friday. Banking holiday in India pushed it to Monday.

Account verification status affects speed too. First-time users face additional verification that can delay transfers.

The receiving bank’s processing time varies. Newer digital banks like IDFC First sometimes process faster than older PSU banks.

Amount matters with Xoom. Transfers above ₹5 lakh take longer (up to 2 hours instead of minutes).

Fee Comparison: Does Speed Cost More?

Here’s where economics enters the picture.

ServiceTransfer Fee (under $1,000)Transfer Fee (over $1,000)Express Fee
Remitly Economy$3.99FreeN/A
Remitly ExpressVaries ($4.99-$14.99)Higher rateIncluded
Xoom$2.99-$30 (varies by method)VariesIncluded in rate

Remitly’s pricing is straightforward. Under $1,000, you pay $3.99 for Economy. Over $1,000, the fee gets waived.

Express costs more. The fee structure varies, but expect $4.99 to $14.99 depending on amount.

Xoom’s fees depend on your payment method. Bank account or PayPal balance costs less. Credit cards cost significantly more.

For a $1,000 transfer using bank payment, Xoom typically charges $2.99 to $4.99.

Neither service is completely free despite marketing claims.

If you need guidance on minimizing transfer charges, I’ve written a detailed guide.

Exchange Rate Markup: The Hidden Speed Cost

Here’s something most people miss.

Both services make money on exchange rates. This matters more than transfer fees.

Remitly Express uses a less favorable rate than Economy. You pay for speed through the exchange rate markup.

For a $1,000 transfer in April 2025, Remitly Economy offered 84.56 INR per USD. Express offered 83.20 INR per USD.

That’s a difference of ₹1,360 on $1,000. More than most transfer fees.

Xoom admits openly they markup exchange rates. The markup varies by amount and payment method.

Average Xoom markup is around 4.49% according to independent reviews.

Remitly’s Economy markup ranges from 0.5% to 2%. Express goes higher.

Think of it this way. If you save 10 minutes but lose ₹1,500 on the exchange rate, was speed worth it?

The exchange rate markup often costs more than the transfer fee itself.

For urgent needs, pay the premium. For planned transfers like monthly SIP investments, use Economy and save money.

Transfer Limits: Can You Send Large Amounts Quickly?

Both services have daily and monthly limits.

Remitly allows up to $30,000 in 24 hours to India for US-based senders. This is one of the highest limits in the industry.

Monthly limits depend on your verification level. Basic accounts start at $2,999 daily and $10,000 monthly.

Xoom uses a three-tier system. Basic Level 1 accounts start at $2,999 daily.

Full verification at Level 3 allows up to $50,000 daily from the US.

If you’re planning to bring large sums when returning to India, understanding these limits helps.

I used Remitly to transfer $28,000 when I first moved back in 2017. Took three separate transfers over two days because I was at Level 2 verification.

Plan ahead for large transfers. Don’t wait until the last minute.

Delivery Methods: Speed Beyond Bank Transfers

Both offer multiple delivery options.

Bank deposits are most common. Direct to HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, PNB, Yes Bank, and most major Indian banks.

Remitly covers 140+ banks across India. Xoom covers most major banks too.

Cash pickup is available through both. Remitly partners with locations across India. Xoom works with Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance.

Cash pickup is fast. Usually ready within minutes to an hour.

Mobile wallet deposits are gaining popularity. Xoom supports Paytm and other UPI-enabled wallets.

This is where Xoom has an edge. UPI transfers through Xoom are instant. Truly instant.

You need your recipient’s UPI ID (like recipient@icici or recipient@paytm). Money appears immediately.

I used this feature once to send ₹10,000 to my brother’s PhonePe wallet. Instant delivery. He used it immediately to pay his mechanic.

For small urgent amounts under ₹50,000, UPI through Xoom beats everything else.

User Experience: Which App Is Easier?

I’ve used both apps extensively.

Remitly’s interface feels cleaner. More intuitive for first-time users. The onboarding process is smooth.

You see the exact exchange rate and fees before confirming. No hidden surprises.

Tracking is excellent. Real-time updates on your transfer status. SMS and email notifications.

Xoom benefits from PayPal integration. If you already have PayPal, setup is instant.

One-click transfers using your PayPal balance or linked cards. Very convenient.

The calculator shows fees clearly. But the exchange rate markup can be confusing for newcomers.

Customer service response varies. Remitly offers 24/7 support in multiple languages. Xoom has support but reviews are mixed.

I had an issue with Xoom once in 2020. Transfer got stuck in verification. Took 3 days to resolve despite “instant” transfer promises.

Remitly resolved a similar issue in one day when my recipient’s bank account number was incorrect.

Good customer service matters more when things go wrong than when they go right.

Both apps work well on iOS and Android. No major technical issues in my experience.

Which Is Actually Faster: The Verdict

If you’re sending up to ₹5 lakh to a major Indian bank, Xoom is marginally faster.

Transfers typically arrive within minutes during banking hours. The UPI option is genuinely instant.

For amounts above ₹5 lakh, Xoom takes up to 2 hours. Still fast but not instant.

Remitly Express competes well with similar speeds. Minutes to major banks.

Where Remitly wins is flexibility. The Economy option lets you save money when speed isn’t critical.

Xoom doesn’t offer a slower, cheaper alternative. It’s built for speed at all times.

Real talk: The speed difference between these two services is minimal for most users.

Both deliver within minutes to hours. Both are vastly faster than traditional banks or wire transfers.

The real question isn’t which is faster. It’s which fits your needs better.

When to Choose Remitly

Choose Remitly if you want flexibility.

Sending monthly support to parents who don’t need instant delivery? Use Economy and save on exchange rates.

Need urgent money for an emergency? Switch to Express.

First-time users get promotional rates. Your first transfer often gets near mid-market exchange rates.

The higher transfer limits ($30,000 daily) help if you’re moving large sums back to India.

Better for NRIs managing multiple accounts and planning regular transfers.

I use Remitly for monthly transfers to my NRE account. The Economy option saves me about ₹2,000 per month compared to Express alternatives.

When to Choose Xoom

Choose Xoom if you prioritize maximum speed.

Already use PayPal? Xoom integration makes transfers seamless.

Need to send to UPI wallets instantly? Xoom is your only option between these two.

Sending smaller amounts frequently for immediate needs? Xoom’s instant delivery works well.

The PayPal backing provides additional security and trust for some users.

If you’re sending money for time-sensitive situations, Xoom delivers consistently fast.

My mother-in-law uses Xoom exclusively from the US. She’s comfortable with PayPal and values the instant UPI option.

Hidden Factors That Slow Down Both Services

Bank details matter more than people realize.

Wrong IFSC codes delay transfers by days. Always verify your recipient’s bank information.

Account names must match exactly. “Karthik Mani” vs “M Karthik” can trigger verification holds.

First transfers take longer. Both services verify your identity thoroughly before processing.

Have your documents ready. Government ID, proof of address, and sometimes source of funds documentation.

Large transfers trigger additional scrutiny. If you’re sending $10,000+, expect questions and possible delays.

Local Indian banking holidays affect both services equally. Check the RBI holiday calendar before urgent transfers.

I maintain a list of recipient bank details in a secure note. Reduces errors and speeds up repeat transfers.

The Speed vs Cost Trade-off

Here’s my practical framework.

For urgent needs (medical emergencies, immediate bill payments, emergency repairs), speed justifies the cost.

Use Remitly Express or Xoom. Pay the premium. Get money there in minutes.

For planned transfers (monthly support, investment contributions, savings), optimize for cost.

Use Remitly Economy. The 3-5 day wait doesn’t matter for non-urgent needs.

For moderate urgency (property payments with a few days’ buffer), consider timing.

Send via Economy on Monday. Money arrives by Thursday/Friday. Save on fees and exchange rates.

I follow this approach strictly. Saved approximately $840 in 2024 by using Economy for planned transfers.

Alternative Options Worth Considering

Both Remitly and Xoom are solid choices. But they’re not your only options.

Wise (formerly TransferWise) often offers better exchange rates. Slightly slower than Xoom but cheaper overall.

I’ve written detailed reviews of both Remitly and Xoom individually.

Wise is another excellent alternative worth exploring.

For NRIs with ICICI accounts, ICICI Money2India offers competitive rates and reasonable speed.

Each service has strengths. I use different services for different purposes.

Tax and Legal Considerations

Remember that transfers over $10,000 must be reported to FinCEN in the US.

Both services handle this reporting automatically. Still good to know.

In India, large deposits might trigger questions from your bank. Keep documentation ready.

If you’re a returning NRI dealing with RNOR status, track all international transfers carefully.

Foreign remittances have tax implications when you transition from NRI to resident status.

Consult with a chartered accountant if you’re regularly transferring large amounts.

Security: Fast Doesn’t Mean Risky

Both services are legitimate and regulated.

Remitly is licensed in all US states. Regulated by FinCEN and state banking authorities.

Xoom operates under PayPal’s licenses and regulations. Additional credibility from the PayPal brand.

I’ve never had security issues with either service.

Both use encryption. Both offer fraud monitoring. Both provide transaction insurance.

Enable two-factor authentication on both accounts. Use strong unique passwords.

Never share your transaction details with anyone except your recipient.

Be aware of hidden forex fees that some services don’t disclose upfront.

My Personal Recommendation

I use both services.

Remitly is my primary service for monthly planned transfers. The Economy option saves money without sacrificing too much speed.

Xoom is my backup for genuine emergencies requiring instant delivery.

Having accounts with both provides redundancy. If one service has issues, I have an alternative ready.

Most NRIs sending money regularly should follow this approach.

Set up accounts with both. Verify your identity fully to unlock higher limits.

Use Remitly Economy for 80% of your transfers. Use Xoom or Remitly Express for the 20% that need speed.

This strategy saved me approximately $1,200 in 2024 compared to using only Express/Xoom options.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don’t assume “instant” means instant in all cases.

Banking hours matter. Send during Indian daytime for fastest processing.

Don’t ignore exchange rates while focusing only on fees.

A $2.99 fee with a 4% rate markup costs more than a $3.99 fee with a 1% markup.

Don’t wait until the last minute for important payments.

Buffer 2-3 days for Economy transfers. Plan ahead.

Don’t skip identity verification until you need to send urgently.

Complete full verification when you first sign up. Raises limits and speeds up future transfers.

Don’t use the same service out of habit.

Compare both options for each transfer. Rates and fees vary by amount and destination.

I check both apps before every transfer over $500. Often saves $20-50 per transaction.

Final Thoughts

Remitly and Xoom are both fast reliable services for sending money to India.

Xoom edges ahead slightly in pure speed for instant transfers. Minutes to major banks, instant for UPI.

Remitly wins on flexibility. The Economy option provides cost savings when you don’t need maximum speed.

The difference in speed is marginal. Both deliver in minutes to hours for urgent transfers.

Your choice should depend on your specific needs:

  • Frequent planned transfers: Remitly Economy
  • Maximum speed needed: Xoom or Remitly Express
  • PayPal user: Xoom for convenience
  • Higher limits needed: Remitly ($30,000 daily)

I’ve been helping NRIs navigate these decisions since 2017. Join our Back to India Facebook group for more discussions on managing money across borders.

The best strategy is having accounts with multiple services. Compare rates before each transfer. Choose based on urgency and cost.

Speed matters. But smart financial planning matters more.
