If you are looking for the best credit cards in India, there are a few things to consider. Credit cards can offer a variety of benefits, including cashback, rewards points, and interest-free periods.
With so many options available, it can be difficult to choose the right card for your needs. Here are ten of the best credit cards in India, based on factors such as rewards, interest rates, and fees.
Why are credit cards good?
Credit cards are good because they allow you to borrow money up to a certain limit in order to purchase items or withdraw cash. They also help to build your credit history and can improve your credit score if used responsibly. Additionally, many credit cards offer rewards programs that give you points or cashback for every purchase you make.
Why are credit cards better than debit cards?
Credit cards are better than debit cards for a number of reasons. First, credit cards offer a level of protection that debit cards do not. If your credit card is stolen, you can report it to the credit card company and they will cancel the card and issue you a new one. You will not be responsible for any unauthorized charges.
Debit cards do not offer this same protection. If your debit card is stolen, you may be responsible for any unauthorized charges.
Second, credit cards can help you build your credit history. Using a credit card responsibly can help you improve your credit score. This can be helpful if you ever need to take out a loan for a major purchase. Debit cards do not have the same effect on your credit score.
Third, credit cards offer rewards and perks that debit cards do not. Many credit cards offer cash back, points, or miles for every purchase you make. Some credit cards also offer special perks, such as access to airport lounges or free hotel nights. Debit cards do not offer these same rewards and perks.
Fourth, credit cards give you the flexibility to pay for items over time.

Choose the card that best fits your needs and start enjoying the benefits of credit card ownership.
For example, if you’re a frequent international traveler, choose a card like the Amex Travelcard that gives a lot of benefits on international trips.
But if you’re an online shopaholic, then choose a card like SBI Simply Click – that gives a lot of benefits and perks for online purchases.

Hi Mani,
Looking forward for your updates for January 2017
Regards
I am an NRI. I don’t have a credit card in India. I would like to apply for a credit card for the usage in India as well as abroad. I may not use it regularly but only to keep as an emergency fund (or to book tickets in EMI). Could you please suggest a card without annual fee.? Which is the best one offers lowest rate of interest.?
Hi Raaz,
India Govt. has announced that they will give ~10% discount for LIC premium payments via credit cards. You could utilize this feature when it is live.
Hi Majeesh,
I would keep 1 and 2 if you really want to only keep 2 cards. But realistically you will just need the HDFC money back credit card with no annual fee. You have 65K and it’s a good cashback card where you can put your regular purchases on.
I wouldn’t recommend ditching cards if you already have them. If it’s a no annual fee card, then reduce the usage and keep it with you as sometimes, dropping a card might reduce your credit score. I would definitely keep the HDFC Regalia one.
Hi Mani Karthik, Nicely written article describing the various Cards in Brief. Keep it up.
Can u suggest among the following Cards, which ones to keep and which one to ditch depending upon the rewards/cashbacks/features/annual-renewal rates.
-HDFC Regalia Visa (Lifetime)
-SBI Elite Visa (4999+Tax)
-Standard Chartered Emirates (Skywards) Platinum World Master (3000+Tax)
-Amex Platinum Travel (1st Year Free & then 5000+Tax)
-Citi Premier Miles (3000+Tax)
Right now having first 4 out of 5.
Cheers.
Pradeep.
Hi, I request your help in selecting the best credit card for me. I’ve 3 active credit cards &my usage goes from Rs 3,000 – Rs 18,000 per month which includes stationary purchases, online payments, fuel filling & paying bills etc. Presently I’ve the following credit cards:

2. HDFC money back credit card with limit of 65,000 (no annual fee)

I wish to filter the cards to 1 or 2. Please share your suggestion. Any help in this regard will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are you going to get one for the first time Hari, then I would suggest getting a prepaid card to build your credit. Details.
Thanks for the reply Mani, I really appreciate it, I have another question.
I have almost decided to got for the Regalia First for 2 lakhs FD, but sometimes I have transactions that are almost 80%-90% of the credit limit(in this case 85% of 2 lakhs), I do not want these high utilization transactions to affect by CIBIL score. In that case can I Increase the credit card limit by depositing more money into the credit card account, is this possible with HDFC secured credit cards(Regalia First) ?
mani

Hi Mani.. I am a premium bank customer. I already have HDFC REGALIA and STANDARD CHARTER MANHATTAN CARD. Both are life time free and therefore i am looking for my 3rd credit card. I need this card to make my LIC premium payment every year which is over rs one lakh. But I heard that American Express as well as SBI don’t give reward benefits for making LIC premium payment, can u confirm if this is right. Also can u suggest me a card which gives maximum reward points or Cashback on LIC premium payment of rs.one lakh.
Great. Yes, I will opt for Regalia first for 2 Lakhs, use it within 20-30% every month, pay off the balances fully every month and build your score for the next six months or so. Once you have build your credit score, you can go for better ones. Here are some tips to improve your credit score.
Hi Mani,
I was planning for a secured Credit Card, so recently paid a visit to my local HDFC branch, I was offered HDFC regalia card for 4 lakhs, and Regalia first for 2 Lakhs, since regalia is being downgraded from Nov 1, should i go for the Regalia first for 2 lakhs FD ?
Hi Sunil,
Good call. Most of us are big on debit cards and less credit savvy, but it’s a lot more rewarding. Welcome to the credit card world!
If you already have FD, what I would suggest is to contact your current bank and get a secured card from them. You can use that to build credit, and once you have enough credit built, apply for a general purpose rewards credit card like one of these.
Here’s more information on how to get credit card for a first timer.
Feel free to contact me if you have more doubts.
Hi Mani,
Very useful article. Keep up the good work.
I have a decent amount of cash in FDs. Want my first credit card. Usually spend everything with debit cards- phone/net/electricity bill payments, rail tickets etc.
Which card would you suggest?
Cheers
Sunil
Pandian, for new credit card users, I suggest going through this guide https://manikarthik.com/blog/first-timer-credit-cards/money/
Sreedhar,
Credit agencies and banks have different tiers they work with. For example a metro like Mumbai is highly considered credit worthy as compared to a small town, where the risks of giving credit is higher (theoretically). However, if you contact the bank directly, they will be able to help you by channeling your case to the nearest branch (in a bigger town most likely). Having said that, it all depends on your credit worthy-ness.
Hello Mani
Why is it that almost all credit cards that can be applied online have list of only major cities / metros in India. I am working in a small town and finding it difficult to get a second credit card.
Sreedhar
For first timers, it is tough to get a credit card with big balances, because you haven’t proved your credit worthiness with a track record. First off, I’d suggest you try checking your credit score and then apply for a secured credit card with a fixed deposit. Buying a car on credit card is kind of absurd. You are better off getting a loan. Apply for the credit cards mentioned above as well, although not all of them are for first timers.
also i have a salary account in icici bank
Hello Mani,
I would like to get a credit card to purchase mobile phones and smart tv and maybe also a car (it is optional as i may choose to get a car loan too). Please suggest any good credit card as i would also like to avoid fixed deposits.
It will be my first credit card
Great. I just sent you an email with details. Please check.
That’s a good one Bandu. There’s one from SBI. Will update in the post with details. Thanks for asking.
For first time users I suggest a secured credit card. Here are the details – https://manikarthik.com/blog/first-timer-credit-cards/money/

The benefits exclusively on booking flights and travel.

I have gone through your blog. Its really great information for Credit card users. Currently I am using, HDFC-All Miles Credit Card, Citi Bank- Rewards Credit Card and SBI Gold Card. Just wanted to know that can I use this card in overseas, if so, what will be the charges or Do I need to activate for International usage. Or can I use the In-country specific credit card? Expecting your valuable advise on this. Thanks in advance
Bhumi, if it is your first, I would suggest ICICI Instant Platinum Credit Card. It’s easier to get and builds your profile there on.
Hi Mani,
This is my first credit card, please suggest me a good credit card for shopping , travelling, no annual fees, and interest should be less.
Hi Mani
My salary account is in ICICI. I will be using the credit card regularly for official and personal transactions ( Bills payments , travel booking, shopping etc) . Presently using Standard charted Super value credit card which has cash back for money spent on fuel, utility etc and wavier in annual fee is also applicable if spent over 1.5 lakh/annum which i do in 3-4 months. Need one more card like the same where I can get benefits for all transactions. Even ok for some small Annual fee if I get good benefits. Pls advise.
HI Mani,
I am using HDFC ALL Miles card but their customer support is pathetic. They dont provide support whenever required.
I would like to take your advice on KOTAK ROYALE Credit Card. I am a very frequent user and use the card during Travelling, Movies and Cashbacks.

I just got a job and planning to have a credit card, it will be my first card. Please suggest which one is suitable for me.
Hi Paramveer,
If it’s your first card, I will recommend getting a secure credit card for a small amount so you can start with small payments and build your credit history. Once you have a decent history and score, it will be easier for your to go for a better card that has the features you requested (like CitiBank Rewards Card).
Hey Mani,
Been on your blog for a couple of days now… However even after scouting over so many options.. still unable to make a decision.
If I may.. This is why i’m looking for a card :-
– Increase / Maintain CIBIL Reputation. ( It’ll be my first card )
– Shop on BigBazaar, Online Retailers, Ecommerce Website, Pay Utility Bills.
– Access to Travel Lounge
– Travel and Movie discounts / offers
– Swap rewards and low interest rate on EMI conversions.
I’m confused between Reward Points and Cashback cards…
I’ve shorlisted CitiBank Rewards Card, Standard Chartered Platinum Rewards, Landmark Rewards, Bajaj Finserv, HSBC, SBI but no Idea on what to choose.
HI mani,
My name is Dhananajay(23)from mumbai ihave recently got a job and i want to buy credit card for normal uses like shopping, and dininig outside .Please suggest best credit card with no annual fee
New American Express®MakeMyTrip Credit Card is a good one if you use MakeMyTrip regularly. Also HSBC Visa Platinum Credit Card is a great option.
Hi Mani. I already have Citi Premier miles. I am frequent flyer. Need another credit card. Pl. guide.
I would recommend either the Citibank Rewards card OR the HDFC bank Moneyback card, Sahil. All the best.
Swati,
All the five cashback and rewards cards mentioned in the table above are good candidates, but I would suggest HDFC Bank MoneyBack Card out of them. If you use MakeMyTrip a lot, then American Express MakeMyTrip card is a good option but if you book tickets at multiple sources, then it may not be of any help.
Satinder, New American Express MakeMyTrip Credit Card and Citibank Rewards Card are two good options for you. Check the details in the table above.
Hi Mahadeo, I’m sure they’ll just need your PAN card, Salary documents and the regular ID documents. Let me know if it goes through.
Can you judge Icici rubyx card? I got one and i have no idea upon benefits.
Hi, currently I m in UAE, and have CITI premier mile credit card, use this very frequently, payment made always on time. Frequent traveler in India and overseas. Planning to return back to India for good, what security I need to provide to have one card from CITI India too.
Amit, I would suggest waiting for some time until your CIBIL score replenishes to apply for another card.
Hi, I have recently got HDFC diners club card just before 1 month ago. Also i got icici platinum card just now. But i applied for citi bank rewards credit card, which was not processed due to less CIBIL score. Is there any other card which is similar to citibank rewards card in terms of benefits. I couldn’t get this card just because of CIBIL score. So please let me know such card which does not require more consideration of CIBIL. As i am holding hdfc card since 1 month.
Shweta,
I would suggest Citi Primer miles. Citibank Platinum, Yatra SBI are also good options for travel.
Hi Mani,
I read your blog describing different types of credit cards. Its really great information. However, my requirement is specifically for travel credit card. I saw Citi primer miles card and HDFC jet privilige cards. Both looked fine to me, yet I am not able to decide which one would be a better card. Can you help?
